A Website about Buddha and Buddhism

This website is about the Buddha and Buddhist teaching, with a particular emphasis on the tradition of Buddhism as practised in Tibet.

The Buddha lived and taught in the area of what is now northern India and southern Nepal. He was born about 2800 years ago near present day Lumbini in southern Nepal in a royal family of the Shakya clan.

Travelling extensively especially in the Gangetic plains region of northern India he passed away at age 81. During his life he taught a spiritual way of life and philosophy that is now called Buddhism.

Although the Buddhist teachings have been adapted to suit various cultures and times as they spread across the world, the basic philosophy and practice of Buddhism is as appropriate now as it was when first taught by the Buddha 2800 years ago.

In a nutshell the Buddha's teaching can be summarized under the two categories of view (or philosophy), and conduct (or practice). The basic view is relativity in that all phenomena are interrelated. This connotes that all events have their causes and neither happen purely by chance nor due to the actions of an independent creator being. The foundation of conduct is nonviolence or the avoidance of harm towards all living beings. The heart practice of Buddhism is therefore love and compassion towards all.
